The Littoral | 2016
The Littoral was a solo exhibition held at POP Gallery, Queensland College of Art in Woolloongabba from 7 to 18 December, 2016.
The Littoral where water and land embrace.
Artist Statement
The littoral zone of the Brisbane River is the current site for my studio work. This zone is where water and land meet, where liquid and solid metaphorically embrace. Wash from river craft interrupts ripples from the tide, churning the riverbed and leaving traces on the shore. This zone becomes a rich source of starting points for my research into aspects of depiction.
The exhibition has three parts: The Littoral Series, the Vista Installation and From within the Littoral Vista.
The drawings are based on close-ups of small sections of photographs I’ve taken during my many site visits. By manipulating scale and minimising extra ‘clues’, such as colour details, a deep sense of ambiguity and the suggestion of hidden or metaphoric landscapes emerge. A duality between the metaphoric and the actual emerges as our minds explore, through association and empathy, possible ‘solutions’ as to what the image depicts. This facilitates and encourages the involvement of the viewer’s imagination to become involved in the perceptive process enabling the viewer to become absorbed in the psychological space of personal contemplation.
