Artist Statement
Jennifer’s overall aim is to explore ways of engaging the viewer not only with the image, but also with nature through the image.
Due to mass production, mass media and the internet we are inundated with the visual image at a historically unprecedented rate. Nature is often commodified and stage-managed in these mass produced images.
Drawing on insights from current research into neurology and perception, Jennifer’s work searches for the elemental connections between humanity and nature. In this exhibition Jennifer is using contemporary digital techniques to produce images which aim to engage the viewer not just with the image, but also with nature through the image.
The waterfalls and rock pools of Protester Falls, the iconic site of Australia’s first major environmental confrontation at Terania Creek, in the lush rainforest of northern New South Wales provide the starting point for these works. The inner city arcadia of Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens has also provided inspiration for the “Bejewelled Series”.
